Immune Globulin
Immune Globulin also known as IG or gamma globulin is not a vaccine but rather a high concentration of antibodies against a variety of infections, particularly hepatitis A. Travelers younger than 12 months of age, those with an allergy to a vaccine component or those with inadequate time before traveling should receive IG. IG will last 3-5 months depending on the dose.
Malaria Prophylaxis (Prevention)
Passport Health uses four different malaria medications that are all recommended for use by the CDC. These are doxycycline, mefolquine (Lariam), chloroquine (Aralen) or Malarone. The travel nurse consultant will discuss which of the malaria medications are appropriate for you and the region to which you are traveling. As with all medications, each malaria medication has potential side effects. These medicines are taken daily or weekly and are always taken before, during and after traveling to a malaria endemic area. Malaria medicine is always recommended when traveling to a region where malaria is endemic.
Antibiotic for Traveler’s Diarrhea
Passport Health offers ciprofloxacin (Cipro), a broad spectrum antibiotic to treat traveler’s diarrhea.
Antiviral
Passort Health offers Tamiflu, an antiviral intended to treat the symptoms of flu for those traveling to area were the Avian Flu or Bird Flu (H5N1) are a problem.
